We are located in beautiful Sedona, Arizona near the Los Abrigados Resort & Spa and next to the popular Tlaquepaque Arts and Crafts Village. The Institute for Ecotourism is a community resource that promotes environmentally sensitive travel and tourism as a means to educate, inspire and inform travelers about the region’s precious natural environment and its cultural treasures.  The Institute of Ecotourism is a non-profit organization.  Please donate to help us continue our work and education!

What is Ecotourism?

The term “eco-tourism” describes the growing trend among travelers who want to have a direct, eco-friendly experience of the natural environment, culture and history of the places they visit. Ecotourism also educates and involves the traveler in experiences related to recycling, water conservation, waste management and energy efficiency through hospitality providers.

Ecotourism increases awareness of a community’s unique bioregion*, and provide these benefits:

  • highlight local flora and fauna attractions
  • bring indigenous peoples and community stakeholders together to manage ecotourism enterprises
  • protect the ecosystem by preserving cultural and biological diversity
  • increase regional cultural and environmental knowledge
  • minimize tourism's environmental impact


* Bioregion: An area constituting a natural ecological community with characteristic flora, fauna, and environmental conditions and bounded by natural rather than artificial borders.

The Mission of the Institute for Ecotourism is to promote environmentally sensitive travel.


We do this by:

  • being a resource for travelers who seek eco-friendly visitor experiences
  • educational programs for people of all ages on and off site
  • partnering with individuals and institutions dedicated to a sustainable future
  • participating in events that increase awareness of our natural world and the ways in which we can enhance and preserve it for future generations.
